Start before the washer
If the garment is heavily coated, remove the easy surface hair first. A reusable fabric roller or garment brush keeps that loose fur from circulating through the whole load.
Sort by fur load and fabric
A dog blanket covered in hair is a poor companion for black office clothes. Separating heavily furred items reduces transfer. Fleece and textured knits can hold more hair mechanically than smoother woven fabrics.
Give laundry room to move
A tightly packed drum limits movement. Use the machine and garment instructions rather than trying to solve the problem with extra detergent or unusually high heat.
Finish in the dryer when care labels allow
The dryer’s movement can help separate already-loosened hair, while the lint filter catches some of it. Clean the lint screen after the load.
